What is verification of identity (VOI)?

Starting July 1, 2016, the NSW Government introduced new verification requirements for all buyers and sellers of property in NSW.

It’s known as Verification of Identity or VOI for short.

 

What documents can be used to verify identity?

The easiest and most common documents are:

  • Birth certificate or passport

  • Drivers license

 

When does VOI need to be completed?

VOI needs to be completed before contracts are exchanged or if exchanged with a real estate agent, will need to be completed before the cooling-off period expires.

 

Why was VOI introduced?

Verification was introduced by the government to combat foreign ownership, tax evasion and fraud.

Verification of Identity (VOI) is an identification process that supports the e-Conveyancing compliance framework. Once verified, we can collaborate and transact efficiently online, enabling successful electronic lodgement and settlement of conveyancing matters.

VOI is valid for two years from the date it occurred.

The easiest and most common documents are:

  • Birth certificate or passport

  • Drivers licence

All documents must be originals. Photocopies will not be accepted.
