What is Verification of Identity (VOI)?
Starting July 1, 2016, the NSW Government introduced new verification requirements for all buyers and sellers of property in NSW.
It’s known as Verification of Identity or VOI for short.
How can I get verified?
There are three options available to you to be verified:
- Online verification
- Face to face by making an appointment with us and coming to our office
- Visit your post office with the necessary paperwork (download below).
Online Verification
Verification at Australia Post
- Download the Australia Post Verification of Identity form
- Print it and fill in the details
- Take it to Australia Post with your identification.
If you are unable to print the necessary form, please get in contact with us and we will post one out to you.
PLEASE NOTE: YOU MUST BE A CLIENT OF RM PROPERTY CONVEYANCING TO USE THIS FORM.
If you are not a client of ours, it will not work for you. Contact your conveyancer or solicitor for the correct forms.
What documents can be used to verify identity?
The easiest and most common documents are:
Birth certificate or passport
Drivers licence.
If you are using Australia Post, you will need:
- The above documents
All documents MUST BE originals. Photocopies will not be accepted.
When does VOI need to be completed?
VOI needs to be completed before contracts are exchanged or if exchanged with a real estate agent, will need to be completed before the cooling-off period expires.
Why was VOI introduced?
Verification was introduced by the government to combat:
Foreign ownership
Tax evasion
Fraud.
